Is PR only for large companies? - MGPR Newsletter

Hi everyone,

There have been many wonderful changes happening at Megan Gasper PR. We are in the process of implementing a new brand identity and updating our website. I also recently gave a presentation on how to implement PR strategically and realistically for small-to mid-sized businesses.

With everything going on, there will not be a full PR blog this month, especially with the website under construction.

But no fear! I've got plenty to share.

Cheers!

Is PR only for large companies?

At my session covering how small-to-mid-sized businesses can approach PR practically and strategically, this big question drove our conversation.

While PR can be confusing and even aspirational for many business leaders, it isn't only for major corporations with million-dollar budgets. After all, the primary purpose of PR is to build relationships that foster trust, credibility and awareness for an organization.

Companies of all sizes need to reach their target audiences, manage their reputations, differentiate from the competition and drive sales and business success. And PR is part of all of that.

The biggest obstacle small-to-mid-sized businesses typically face is a lack of resources, either in man-power, time, budget or all three.

But like with everything, doing something small and doing it well is better than doing nothing at all.

There's so much nuance and context that goes into how PR pros advise clients, but here are a few tips for getting started on your PR journey.

  1. Align on business goals and priorities within your organization.
  2. Identify your primary key audiences.
  3. Identify relevant opportunities/moments for the year.
  4. Create a calendar and start preparing for each opportunity in advance.
  5. Find the intersection of what you are looking to communicate, who your audience is and what matters to them, and what reporters, influencers, community organizers and other organizations consider important or necessary to cover, partner, post or promote.
  6. Make a plan for how you'll actually reach these groups.
  7. Reach out.

My advice is to get started. Don't be discouraged. Start small. Be realistic. Be helpful and think about what is mutually beneficial.

And when all else fails, reach out to a PR pro for help. 🤗

Fosters

Dory and Monkey made their way to the Catcade and are available for adoption! We miss them and their antics dearly, but are excited for them to find their forever homes.

On top of my regular fostering and weekly volunteering, the organization's annual Prom fundraiser was on March 7. I volunteered to help with setup and then had a blast at the event.

Together, we raised more than $200,000 to save hot mess cats. Incredible!!!

Dear reader, February is the worst month of the year. Perhaps this is a hot take? January gets so much more hate because it has more days. But in my household, February always takes the cake. Even with this year's seasonably warm weather in Chicago for a few days there, and the fact that we celebrate my husband's birthday during the month. This year, though, it has also brought me a lot of new opportunities and kept me really busy. And I'm lucky enough to write this from my couch on a...
