MGPR Newsletter: A Guide to the PR Landscape

Dear reader,

February is the worst month of the year.

Perhaps this is a hot take? January gets so much more hate because it has more days.

But in my household, February always takes the cake. Even with this year's seasonably warm weather in Chicago for a few days there, and the fact that we celebrate my husband's birthday during the month.

This year, though, it has also brought me a lot of new opportunities and kept me really busy. And I'm lucky enough to write this from my couch on a particularly sunny day. I'm grateful.

Thanks for being here!

Earned, Paid, Owned & Shared: A Guide to the PR Landscape

When there are so many channels and shiny objects to chase in the world of marketing and PR, it can be hard to focus and understand what will be truly valuable to your company.

When most people outside of the industry think of PR, they think of someone “spinning” a story, the (horrible) phrase “all press is good press,” glamorous celebrity publicists strategically playing the paparazzi or someone making one phone call to “handle” a crisis situation.

However, PR is so much more than those things. While each of the above misunderstandings comes from some semblance of truth, those caricatures minimize the full breadth of public relations.

Every PR program at every company ultimately exists to build mutually beneficial relationships between the company and its key stakeholders. But what’s different is every organization, its goals, its audiences and what matters to both sides.

While every strategy and tactic may be different for each company at different stages, depending on the individual circumstance, there are baseline things to explore: owned, earned, shared and paid media.

What's New?

Quick updates on the business and things I love most: animals, reading, travel, sports and more.

Fosters

We welcomed Dory and Monkey to our bathroom just about three weeks ago. They are estimated to be 8 months old. They aren't siblings, but they are now friends. 🙂

Dory is our first female foster and she is so full of love. She hops on my back when I clean the room, purrs constantly and loves to give head butts.

Monkey is a goofball. He can't sit still, makes biscuits on everything and loves to use my legs to stretch. He's not as cuddly as Dory is, but he loves it when we come hang out with him. As long as we aren't giving him eye drops.

Books

2026 Goal Progress: 6 / 60 books

I started the month lighter on reading than I would've liked. But I finished strong, matching my January total of three books. They were all great for different reasons!

Hi everyone, There have been many wonderful changes happening at Megan Gasper PR. We are in the process of implementing a new brand identity and updating our website. I also recently gave a presentation on how to implement PR strategically and realistically for small-to mid-sized businesses. With everything going on, there will not be a full PR blog this month, especially with the website under construction. But no fear! I've got plenty to share. Cheers!
